Ladies, I know it's overwhelming when you plan for your first waxing treatment. It's totally natural. My goal here is to make you feel more relaxed about losing your 'waxing cherry'.
Here are my tips from the last 25 years performing women's waxing.
Preparing for your first waxing treatment
- Waxing hurts more in the days leading up to your period. If possible, plan ahead.
- Don't tell your friends. They can relish the chance to scare the heck out of first timers. Keep it to yourself and come in calm and relaxed.
- Don't clipper your hair. If you trim it too short, there might not be enough length for the wax to grip. If your hair needs trimming, your waxing therapist won't mind doing it.
- Moisturise the night before or morning of your waxing treatment. This puts your skin in the best possible condition ahead of your wax.
- If you're a Mum bringing in your tween or teen daughter to have 'unfeminine' hair removed, don't carry on about how awful it is, or use thoughtless words. She already feels awful.
- Wear comfortable loose clothing to your treatment. If you are having a bikini wax or Brazilian wax, wear loose-fitting cotton knickers so your skin can breathe, or better still, wear no undies at all.
- Avoid having sex on the morning of a Brazilian wax treatment so that your labia and perineum aren't overly sensitive.
- If you decide to have a shower to freshen up before your wax, avoid going overboard with the soap. Your skin has natural oils that help protect it.
- Finally, if you have any questions, a good therapist will have no issue answering them. Everybody had a first time. Just relax.
Female Waxing After-care
- After your waxing treatment, and until the skin has calmed down, use a good quality after-wax lotion.
- At around three weeks when new growth begins to show, exfoliate lightly to help prevent in-grown hairs and, then apply your lotion again.
- Avoid chlorinated pools or hot tubs until your skin has calmed down.
- Salt is a natural antiseptic. If you live near the beach, your skin will truly appreciate a swim in clean salt water after your wax.
- Avoid colognes and antiperspirants until your skin has returned to normal.
- Your waxing sessions should be around 4 to 6 weeks apart. Your hair should be at least 5mm long for the wax to grip successfully.
