FAQ ★ Fitness Planning
I'm very unfit. Will this be safe for me?
All fitness activities involve a degree of risk. Thus, it's essential to take all necessary precautions.
Before you attend a Fitness Planning session, visit your GP and tell them you're about to start a program to improve your fitness.
The program will initially focus on addressing your caloric intake, and performing light cardio and resistance training. The exercise component will increase progressively over subsequent sessions as your fitness level improves.
When you come for your first session with me, you will sign a declaration to confirm your GP has given you the green light to start exercising, and that you accept all responsibility for doing so.
I tried running but my knees hurt.
Yes. If you're overweight or not physically active, and then suddenly take up running, your knees, legs, hips, and lower back won't handle the strain.
To fix this, I'll first teach you how to walk and stretch. We have to remind your legs what they're meant to do.
Your body will respond quickly to this increased activity. Old neural pathways will start firing again, ligaments and cartillage will renew, joints will move more fluidly, and muscles and tendons will grow stronger.
Within weeks, you'll be walking briskly, and then striding, and then running. It's brilliant.
How many Fitness Planning sessions will I need?
That depends upon you and how much support you feel you need. Everyone is different.
The first session is definitely the most important, as this is where you'll gain the tools and education you need to achieve ongoing results.

Is this like a PT session? What can I expect?
It's more in-depth than personal training. First, we'll sit down and discuss your fitness goals, nutrition, etc. We'll then do some stretching, then light cardio, followed by resistance training.
Cardio consists of a brisk 5 minute walk around the block. I'll be with you in order to gain a measure of your leg and glute strength, and also the condition of your joints. Back at the studio, you'll then go for a ride on the virtual trainer, to establish a safe baseline for your cardio fitness.
The exercise component of this first session isn't terribly intense. It's about injury prevention, preparing your body, and teaching you safe and efficient exercise technique. Each time you return for a followup session, we'll repeat the walk and cycle components to compare your progress.
I'll send you home with exercises, stretches, and nutrition tips, so you can kick off from day one.
How do I prepare for my Fitness Planning session?
Dress for comfort and wear rubber-soled running shoes or trainers. No bare feet, crocs, or sandals.
Also download the fitness app, Strava, and set up a free account. I prefer Strava because your activities upload to it seamlessly regardless of your brand of phone or smart watch. If you add me on Strava, I can also see your fitness activities in case you need support between sessions.
Finally, a smart watch is ideal. It should support multiple types of activities, monitor your heart rate, and measure your speed in real time. You'll find it a vital tool for measuring your progress. Sync your watch with Strava so it auto-uploads activities.
My doctor said I have sarcopenia. Can this help?
Sarcopenia is loss of muscle mass and strength due to living a sedentary lifestyle.
Assuming you have no compounding factors like osteoporosis or collapsed vertebral discs, and that you can walk and have mobility in all of your limbs, sarcopenia is 100% reversible. So yes, I can help.
